Rotkaeppchen, now Germany's best-selling sparkling wine, was first produced in a vineyard south of Leipzig in 1856. The winery was expropriated by the East German regime after World War II and was turned into a collective that produced 15 million bottles per year. For a period after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the brand lost popularity and in 1991 sold only 2.9 million bottles. Today, Rotkaeppchen is thriving, selling about 150 million bottles per year. In 2002 the company bought one of its biggest rivals, the German branch of French Champagne-maker Mumm, and now holds about 40% of the entire German sparkling wine market.
