Why: Smiths (or Smiths Station), first settled in 1826, was only incorporated in 2001 after experiencing rapid population growth in the 1980s. New roads in the town allow residents to commute to nearby Phenix City (8 miles) and Columbus, Ga. (10 miles), to work.
