One year ago, with hundreds of thousands of jobs disappearing each month and unemployment already at 8.1%, we profiled 26 ventures started by the newly unemployed. These entrepreneurs span industries ranging from programming to manufacturing to retail. Some saw the chance to chase ideas or passions they couldn't make time for as employees. Others turned to entrepreneurship because they had few other options.
We revisited the Rebounders a year later, hearing back from 23 of the 26 companies we first profiled. Five of the entrepreneurs returned to full-time jobs. One took off on a round-the-world trip. Most are still in business for themselves. A few of these ventures have thrived, several have changed direction, and all faced the challenge of a nascent business in a troubled economy. Here's a look at where this cohort of entrepreneurs forged in the recession are now.
