To design and build a table at Ponoko, a do-it-yourself furniture site, you download a starter kit, choose materials, and draw up your plan in Adobe (ADBE) Illustrator, Macromedia Freehand, or some other design software program. Upload your creation to Ponoko's Web site, and the company then contracts with a local manufacturer you have approved, which ships the parts. The site says it currently hosts thousands of user-generated product designs, though many are still pretty rudimentary.
