Trump International Hotel and Tower, Penthouse*

Sale price: $33,177,000
Listing price: $18,000,000
Location: 1 Central Park West
Type: Condo

Not only is this penthouse the most expensive sale in Manhattan during the first three months of 2010. It's also the highest price ever paid for a foreclosed property in New York. The penthouse, located on the 52nd floor of the Trump International Hotel & Tower, is still unfinished: The previous owner, Italian film producer Vittorio Cecchi Gori, who produced Il Postino,—had gutted the space but never renovated it. The property fell into foreclosure and was put back on the market in December 2008. A few contracts were signed last year but never fulfilled. On Jan. 22, the unit sold by auction for $33.18 million. "It's a sold-and-closed transaction. The money has been wired and the transaction is finalized," says Howard Margolis, managing director of Prudential Douglas Elliman, the sale's exclusive broker. While it lacks walls, the 5,500-sq.-ft. residence is all-glass on three sides, offering views of Central Park and the Hudson River. Margolis says the renovation cost could easily top $10 million. He would not reveal the identity of the new buyer.
