The Columbus metro area, which includes areas in both Georgia and Alabama, has an unemployment rate of 9.7 percent, according to June data from the BLS. A $3.5 billion expansion of Fort Benning, one of the nation’s largest army bases, is expected to create more than 11,000 jobs among active-duty soldiers, and a $72-million business park planned near the fort could employ more than 1,000 within five years, reported the Atlanta Business Chronicle. Atlanta has the state’s second-highest forecast price increase, at 11.8 percent.
