Ukraine, Europe's fastest-shrinking country, has seen its population decrease steadily since 1993, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, according to Kyiv Post. The country's death rate, 15.9 per 1,000 people, exceeds the birth rate, 10.4 per 1,000, according to the State Statistics Committee of Ukraine. The population also faces an above-average rate of HIV in both men and women. Over the next 40 years, the population is expected to contract by 23.1 percent.
