Pentagon Under Attack

2007

In June 2007, Chinese military hackers working for the People's Liberation Army penetrated the Defense Dept.'s computer network, the Financial Times reported in September of that year. The Pentagon acknowledged the attack and said it took the affected network—an unclassified e-mail system used by policy aides working for Defense Secretary Robert Gates—down for more than a week as the attacks proceeded. China denied a role in the attack.
