China Attacks Obama and McCain

2008

Amid the heat of the 2008 Presidential election, FBI and Secret Service agents revealed to the Obama campaign that its computer network had been attacked by a foreign government that was stealing data at a rapid clip, according to a 2008 report in Newsweek. Soon it emerged that John McCain's campaign had been targeted, too. According to an account in Obama's Wars by Washington Post (WPO) reporter Bob Woodward, Obama was told in his first national security briefing as President-elect that the attacks had been carried out by China. The reason? China seemed to be gathering information on the policy positions of the two candidates as they evolved. China has denied participating in the attack.
