When the Stuxnet computer worm was first detected in June, it set off alarm bells among IT security experts around the world because of its sophistication and ability to spread rapidly across the borderless Internet. But what really put security experts on edge was the target: industrial computers that have rarely come under attack.

Stuxnet is just the latest. The digital infrastructure has been a target for disruption and theft of sensitive information for almost as long as it has been in existence. What follows are some highlights in the 30-year history of hacking and information warfare.
